Stummes in America Since Mid-1800s
Have you ever wondered how many Stummes there really are in America? How about all the Stummes in Europe? Where did the Stumme family originate and how did the Stummes get to America?
Is there a famous, or infamous, person in the Stumme family? What does the name Stumme mean?
If you’ve ever asked any of these questions, then this web site is for you. The Stumme Family History site is an attempt to answer questions about the Stumme family, provide some insight as to our ancestors, both here and in Germany, and allow for you to provide additional information based on your own knowledge or research.
It appears that Stummes began coming to America in the mid-1800s from the Hannover area of Germany. More came over later.
Although the Stumme surname is relatively rare, families bearing this name can be found across the United States. Perhaps the largest grouping of Stummes lives in Iowa. The beginning of this group lies with the emigration of one Christoph Stumme and his two brothers (so the story goes) from Hannover to New York in the 1850s. After a short stay in Pennsylvania Christoph and at least one of his brothers made their way to Illinois, settling in Schaumberg, Cook County, just west of Chicago. Christoph eventually moved to Iowa where he began farming.
A similar story is heard about the Stummes living in New York. In this case the immigrant was August Wilhelm Stumme who came over from Germany in 1854 along with his wife and nine children.
It seems logical that all of the Stummes in America are related, if only by their “shirt-tails.”
