Annie Laura Stumme
July 6, 1932 ~ June 21, 2021

Annie Laura Stumme, a resident of Odenton, MD, passed away on Monday, June 21, 2021 at the Crofton Care & Rehabilitation Center in Crofton, MD. She was 88. Annie was born on July 06, 1932 in Panama City, FL and was daughter of the late Athniel and Beulah (nee Davis) Appelberg.

Annie grew up in Panama City, Florida where she attended Panama Grammar and Bay High School “Class of 50.” She and her sister shared the class Salutatorian award for almost identical grade point averages. She began studies at Florida State University but her marriage to a young Air Force serviceman on February 10th, 1951 interrupted that. For the rest of her life she and family followed on her husband’s varied assignments which included air bases in Florida and Maine, two 9-month assignments to Syracuse, NY, for his language training and two tours in Germany (both prior to the destruction of the Wall in Berlin).

Upon her husband’s retirement in 1967 they lived in Tallahassee for several years where he attended Florida State University. Their next move was to Australia for two years after which they moved to Maryland where they lived the remainder of her life.

Throughout their travels she and her family were always involved in Baptist church life. She taught children’s Sunday School classes and was involved as a Girl Scout leader in Germany. Annie enjoyed sewing, cooking and collecting Candlewick crystal which began as wedding presents. For a number of years she participated in Disaster Relief efforts including preparing meals for police and first responders in New York City following 9/11. Annie doted on her many grand and great grandchildren.

Annie was the beloved wife of Frederick E. Stumme for 70 years; loving mother of Marcia Layton, Mary Esther Smith (Jack) and William Stumme (Maureen). She also is survived by nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and by her sister Mary O. Appelberg.  She is predeceased by her parents, Athniel and Beulah (Davis) Appelberg, and her identical twin sister Anna E. Rue.

Funeral services are private. Memorials may be directed to the Glen Burnie Baptist Church, 7524 Old Stage Road, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.

Over a month ago we welcomed our sixth great-grandchld into the family. Savannah Paige Thompson, daughter of Tess Marie (Stumme) & Andrew Thomposn arrived on August 18th; two days after her mother's birthday. She's the grandaughter of our son, William, and his wife, Maureen. Savannah wowed the hospital doctors and nurses, and us, with her bright red hair. It came partly from both sides of the famiy.Tess, a middle school teacher, will return to the classroom in mid-October.

The Stumme web site has been active for a number of years now. And I see a good many visits. I hope you have found what you are looking for and maybe fill some gaps in your own family history. But any family history is never complete, so input from relatives make this site more meaningful for those making inquiries. It also helps me to correct any errors which may have found their way in because of faulty research. So, join in the fun and submit your suggestions as appropriate.
